Swami Probuddhananda

Swami Probuddhananda was born in Guwahati, Assam on December 5th, 1971. Swamiji knew Bhagavan in the Indian Railway quarters of Guwahati from his childhood. During his teenage years, he worked with Bhagavan in theatre and played the role of his son. In later years, he became impressed with Bhagavan when he heard his speech about the Buddha. He started to visit Bhagavan with friends to hear His talks on Vedanta, and within no time, became immersed in a strong love of Him.

At age twenty-two, Swami Probuddhananda went into the depths of realization when Bhagavan told Him to sink into the ocean of consciousness. Specifically, Bhagavan told him to, “Sink, Sink, Sink,” and Swamiji sank into the depths of samadhi on 11 September 1994. Shortly afterwards, he left his professional life. On 5 April 1998, Bhagavan initiated Swamiji into a sannyasi (monk), as one of the first six monks in the International Vedanta Society order.

In November 1999, Bhagavan asked Swamiji to come to Varanasi and join his other brothers there to start an ashram. In ten years, with the help of his spiritual brothers, he developed both the men’s and women’s ashrams there. Swamiji also began to lecture at schools, universities and social organizations, and visited Europe and the USA. He authored a book: ‘With Love, Swami Probuddhananda: Letters on Advaita Vedanta’ and several articles. Currently (as of 2018), Swamiji serves as the Secretary of IVS.
